Alumni Live Lives of High Adventure
By Ralph M. Hendershot
Cliff and Denise Tonsberg, brother and sister, graduated from CA in 2003 and 2001 respectively. Since then they have both enjoyed extensive travel in addition to college studies thrown in for balance and practicality! Cliff just graduated from UTK with a degree in environmental studies and Denise will soon finish a nursing degree from SAU.
Denise spent a year of study and adventure in Australia. She has traveled extensively in Mexico, Jamaica, Aruba and Fiji. She has also traversed the U.S. several times. After the school year finished in Australia, instead of heading home, Denise was able to find a job at the commissary of large, family camping site on Rottnest Island off the western coast of Australia near Perth and Fremantle. One of her career goals is to be a Navy nurse at the South Pole!
Cliff spent a year of study and adventure in Argentina, having just returned from his second trip there. And, get this, on that first expedition to Argentina, Cliff, with six others, DROVE there from the States, a distance of more than 10,000 miles! He also spent a summer at Sagunto, Spain, and on another occasion traveled extensively in Western Europe. He has, for several summers, driven out to California to be a counselor at the SDA youth camp in Yosemite National Park. While there he has climbed El Capitan, elevation 7,564 feet, and Half Dome, elevation 8,852 fee(!) both very difficult and well-known rock-climbing ventures. And if all this weren't enough, in March, 2009, Cliff will spend the next two years working for the long-established government program called Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic!
I am proud of the fact that I am an alumnus of Collegedale Academy, the same school where so many outstanding and interesting young people have graduated and become accomplished and successful in their lives.
