C.A. Prepares for This Year’s Musical
The Music and Art departments of Collegedale Academy and A.W. Spalding Elementary School - the same company that brought you The Music Man, Jazz City Junction, The Sound of Music, and the Reluctant Dragon - now bring you Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I. With a cast of over one hundred costumed students accompanied by a live student orchestra, on a set created by art students, The King and I promises to be an unforgettable evening. Four shows are scheduled: September 30, October 1, 4, and 5, at 7:00p.m. in the Collegedale Academy Auditorium. Tickets are $10.00, $12.00, and $15.00, and are available during school hours at Collegedale Academy. Proceeds from the four shows benefit the Music and Art departments.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals, part of the golden age of the Broadway musical, rank among America's favorites. Although Rodgers and Hammerstein's personal favorite was Carousel, and most popular was The Sound of Music, many people feel The King and I has the best musical score. Fans of the movie will be interested to know that there are four additional songs in the play that were not included in the movie.
Although there is controversy about how the king is portrayed in the play, The King and I is more true to history than many plays which claim to be based on history. Based on the book Anna and the King of Siam it is a memoir of Anna Leonowens, who was part of the King's attempt to modernize Siam (Thailand) during the 1860s.
